The Bridgetown Library Company is established as a private subscription library, laying the foundation for library service in Rahway.

Rahway Library Association Founded

A group of local women, led by Catherine Craig Squier, formally establishes the Rahway Library Association and operates from a local schoolroom.

Official Incorporation

Official Incorporation

1864

Because women could not legally incorporate at the time, their husbands filed the incorporation petition and transferred ownership back to the women founders.

First Dedicated Library Building

First Dedicated Library Building

1869

A library building is constructed at Irving Street and Seminary Avenue, becoming the second-oldest purpose-built library still standing in New Jersey.

Donations and bequests begin to establish the financial foundation that supports the library's long-term growth.

Carolyn Wells Era

Carolyn Wells Era

1890-1902

Acclaimed author Carolyn Wells serves as library director before embarking on her successful literary career.

The library expands its offerings with the addition of a dedicated children's department.

Following financial challenges during the Great Depression, the library becomes fully supported by the City of Rahway.

As collections and services expand, the children's department temporarily relocates to the City Hall basement to accommodate demand.

The library automates its systems and launches its first public website, bringing services online.

The library building suffers severe damage from Hurricane Floyd and is later demolished.
